Lockton looked through the cloud of smoke, his lip curled as he prepared to continue the fight.
Heâd come to the top of the stairs to find three thugs in the entry, the butler on the ground clutching Trixie to his chest as the dog wiggled to get free, yipping as she squirmed. Heâd raced down, sword drawn, only to have one instantly fire off a shot.
So that was how it was going to be.
The bullet veered left, not even coming close to him, but another shot had rung from above and one of the thugs dropped to the ground. Lockton glanced up to see James standing above with a pistol in each hand.
He gave the man an appreciative nod, noting that a shot like that was difficult at best and James had some real skill after all. His estimation of the man rose considerably, and he was glad to have James at his back.
But heâd share that with his future brother-in-law later. There were still two men to deal with: one slight and nervous, the other large as an ox with a mean glare and dark beady eyes. Lockton needed to keep one alive. Heâd have to gain some information, and if he could manage it, heâd keep the smaller man. That fellow was far more likely to share what he knew.
Smaller men had to compromise more.
Lockton started down the stairs again, gaining speed as he raised the sword, ready to swing.
But the smaller of the two raised a pistol and Lockton dove to both avoid the shot and hit the man in the gut. Before heâd made it, a flash of white and brown hit the thug square in the hip, sending him crashing into the other man and knocking the shot off its mark as well.
If Trixie had attempted to jump into the larger man, she might not have pushed him off course. But as it stood, the dog had just saved his life.
Not that there was time to think on it much.
His dive sent him crashing into both men, knocking them back against the massive front door as grunts and cries tore from their lips.
He felt a moment of triumph and then laughter nearly bubbled from his mouth as Trixie launched a fierce attack on one manâs breeches.
Raising a fist, he sent it crashing into the smaller manâs stubbly jaw, the man going limp as he slid to the floor. Heâd not had a choice. That man was on his left and that had been his free hand.
And just as the last man, the large fellow with beady eyes, attempted to raise his gun, Lockton pressed his sword to his throat. âDrop it to the ground.â
The gun clattered against the floor, echoing up the stairs.
âIâm right behind you, Lockton, and Iâve still got one loaded pistol,â James said.
Lockton gave the thug a humorless smile. âYou heard the man. I donât kill you, he will.â
âI heard,â he responded in a deep, hard voice.
âWhat are you doing here?â
âYou already know,â the man said, spitting at Locktonâs feet.
